A new user that I created does not experience this problem. Most likely a corrupt configuration.

For completeness, here's a debdiff that fixes the bug in precise. Given the very small impact of this bug, though, I'd personally be inclined to wontfix the precise task sooner than go through the SRU dance...

The attachment "indicator-datetime_0.3.94-0ubuntu2.1.debdiff" seems to be a debdiff. The ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the "patch" tag, and if you are member of the ~ubuntu-sponsors, unsubscribe the team.

Since Ryan said he doesn't want to pursue an SRU, there is nothing to sponsor for 12.04. Marking Won't Fix. Feel free to adjust if someone can follow this through.

Is this still an issue on trusty? I tried to reproduce in a VM but the gnome fallback session seems pretty broken atm. The 2D one had a lot of missing indicators and the 3D didn't come up right at all (ie, the unity launcher showed up on the left even though I had top and bottom panels).

It is. I've proposed a branch upstream:
https://code.launchpad.net/~rtandy/indicator-datetime/lp976100/+merge/200209

Probably bug 1256961. Give it a couple of minutes and it finishes loading.

That's bug 1232299. The workaround is to log into unity first, let
Compiz process its upgrade scripts, and then log into Flashback
afterwards. I haven't had time to propose a Compiz patch yet, sorry.

Ok, thanks. Once upstream has approved this I think it would be fine to get into the archive. I'll note that the patch attached to this bug is different than the one in the upstream merge request. Since trusty will get that bug fix once it is merged, I am ging to unsubscribe ubuntu-sponsors for now, as there is nothing to sponsor. Please feel free to resubscribe if needed (but as I said, trusty should just get the fix through normal processes).

With the merge of lp:~robert-ancell/indicator-datetime/no-panel, released in 13.10.0+14.04.20140217-0ubuntu1, the behaviour is correct in Trusty now, so marking fixed.
