Bug Description

With a clean install I've been experiencing random logouts, especially while watching flash videos. I had the default Nvidia driver for this distro, 295.40 installed. I have removed Nvidia components and am now using the Nouveau driver. No more logouts, but unsatisfactory performance when gaming.

this may be marked as a duplicate of #982710 should not be. But I have been affected by the exact same problem as #992795 without the the degraded performance noted in #982710. Unlike bug #991878 it doesn't just occur when involving flash.

upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 LTS last night and since then I have had segfaulting xorg at very random intervals, hasn't seemed to happen while the system is sitting idle, has happened while browsing (firefox+flash, firefox-no flash content) while importing in rythmbox (rythmbox segfault also) and simply while trying to config fldigi.

system is AMD64, 64bit ubuntu 12.04LTS, nvidia g92 (geforce 9800 GT) and nvidia-current installed.
have removed nvidia-current to see if there lies the cause...

@raymund84: Yes, I agree with you completely. Your symptoms are exactly the same as mine and I can't see any reason for calling this a duplicate of #982710. I now have tried 295.40, (default) 295.33, and now the latest 302.07. None of them work with Ubuntu 3D, but the last works fine in 2D. (I didn't try 2D with the others) Nouveau runs without problems. I feel this might be a bug in xorg?

I just want to add that this only seems to affect 3D versions. could this have anything to do with Compiz? I'm able to watch videos without logouts using Gnome classic or Ubuntu 2D. I've tried this with Nvidia drivers: 280.13 (in 11.10-x86_amd64) without any issues, 295.40 both in 12.04-x86_64 and 11.10-x86_64 having 3D logouts, also 295.49 & 302.07-beta with logouts.

random logouts here too... No problems with 11.04, but problems with 12.04LTS. Randow logout in chromium browser, approx every 2nd day - very annoying, all work is lost...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982710 refers to the speed of the NVidia driver, this is not the issue here. This relates to random dropouts from the lightdm session, usually when there is some sort of interaction with the system (keyboard...in general, I am always typing when this happens.)

I don't think this a duplicate of the bug #982710 either. My logouts are much more often then every coupld of days.. sometimes they can happen as much as 2 - 3 times every 10 minutes, and then not for a little while, but very consistent none the less. I do mainly web browsing (with flash and without flash) and it does seem that flash can kill it faster than anything else. I have tried completely removing nvidia-current and the behaviour persisted but not as often. I suspect compiz as well... but wouldn't be shocked if it's both (the combination of the two). I hope this gets fixed soon, getting logged out every few minutes makes it very difficult to do anything.

This bug is in it's own league. Has anyone personally seen a bug through to its fixed conclusion on this website? I also have a problem with duel monitors and I am just not seeing any progress. So I am wondering if these bugs get fixed in an update ie one day update manager will be the ubuntu bug messiah and magically fix the bug? Is that the way it works? Or do I have to be more proactive and look for and apply the bug fixes? Seriously considering going back to 11.10 where things worked. Never - Never - never (since i have been using ubuntu form version 8) have I ever lost work or time because of a nasty bug like this one.

I just contacted Nvidia through there website via chat (chatted with a guy named Mo). I asked (among other things) if they were even aware of the problem. He referred to there Linux Group and said they would contact me. I referenced a few of the Lauchpad Bug Report Websites. I will keep the group informed if/when I get an email back.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the additional information.

This problem has been reported and Engineering is actively investigating the issue. We aim to fix this for our upcoming 304.x driver in July, but as you know schedules can change.

I have added myself to the bug report so I will be notified when this is fixed, and I will notify you at that time.

So if it is acceptable with you, I will close this support case and will inform you when the fix is available.

Best regards,
Mike
