Bug Description

Hello everyone. We trying to package Compiz 0.9 for Fedora and official repos. The problem is that the "old" one Compiz 0.8 is still actively used and Fedora maintainers against to replace it since it used for MATE project for example, but they are not against to package Compiz 0.9 as compat package, see discussion [1]. With one requirement: both packages should not conflict with each other. To achieve this we need to have binaries and libraries with different name or suffix in Compiz 0.9.

Can we figure something out here and solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but as far as a I understand / know 0.9 is continuation of original project. compiz-reloaded is project that should do rename.

Maybe Sam Spilsbury has something to say about this.

Historically speaking, yes, 0.9+ was a continuation of the original project. This was agreed upon by the main stakeholders at the time in 2009. Of course, the reality is different - some people want to keep using the 0.8 series. That's their choice.

To make things work practically - can the binaries by renamed in the fedora packagespec, or do they need to be renamed upstream?

By "the binaries", I should clarify that I mean the 0.9 binaries that are being proposed to enter into the compat repos.

I agree with Alberts here. If someone forked an old version of Compiz, it's they who should do the rename. But of course you are free to package Compiz in your distro under a different name, as long as you obey the license.

Also, the thread you linked mentions adjustments in compiz-reloaded (“gtk-theme reloading during theme switching, desktop shortcuts, special theme page in ccsm, etc”). This doesn't really motivate the need for having a fork, merge proposals implementing that are welcome in this project too.

Thanks you all for clarification. I didn't know much about Compiz history in this period of time when Compiz Reloaded appeared. This is really bad. I wanted to file a bug Compiz Reloaded upstream, at least maybe this could help with formalities in Fedora, but there is already one was https://gitlab.com/compiz/compiz-core/-/issues/65
