Bug Description

On Dell XPS 15 9560 running ubuntu 17.04 with proprietary NVIDIA driver v375.39 (Nvidia-375) /w NVIDIA GTX 1050 card, screen set to 3840x2160 resolution, when launching Extreme Tux Racer from GUI or terminal it repeatedly launches and closes, machine so unusable I can't close it or restart the system.

When launched from a terminal the terminal window is filled with message

The requested video mode is not available, switching to a valid mode.

Resetting Ubuntu screen resolution to 1920x1080 fills the screen with glitchy graphics for a second, then black screen for a second, repeats constantly. Music playing but no visible graphics.

found a work away:
run the game as root on a different X session (no compiz):
sudo startx /usr/games/etr -- :8

a better way - disable fullscreen mode:
create (or edit) the "options.txt" file in $HOME/.etr/ (where $HOME is your home folder)
with the following declarations:

# ------------------------------------------------------------------
# The first group of params can be adjusted
# on the configuration screen, too
# ------------------------------------------------------------------

# Full-screen mode [0...1]
  [fullscreen] 0

# Screen resolution [0...9]
# 0 = auto, 1 = 800x600, 2 = 1024x768
# 3 = 1152x864, 4 = 1280x960, 5 = 1280x1024
# 6 = 1360x768, 7 = 1400x1050, 8 = 1440x900, 9=1680x1050
  [res_type] 2

Affects development version 19.04 (Disc Dingo) using Nvidia GTX750. Both versions 390 and 418 drivers have been tried and both fail. The Nouveau driver works OK.
