Gradient handles interfere with node editing

Bug Description

When a path that is filled with a gradient is selected, and then the node editing tool is selected, the gradient editor handles are also shown. These are "above" the nodes - for a rectangle they obscure the upper left and upper right nodes. These obscured nodes can still be selected by dragging a square around them, but there is no way to see that they have been selected. Load the attached SVG example to see this effect.

The gradient editing handles should not be visible while the gradient editing tool is active.

Problem observed with r12816 on Windows XP and Linux.

Note: you can disable gradient editing per tool in the preferences (it is enabled for most shape/path tools by default).

Please clarify: Do you mean the node tool ('N') or really the dedicated gradient tool ('G') for editing gradients on-canvas?

AFAIU the underlying issue is already tracked in
