cut-and pasting text results in bitmaps, not nice font

Bug Description
OK, macosx 10.9.4, inkscape 0.48-5.
Fire up a new blank document, hit the "A" button to go into text mode. For me, this is "sans" 40 point.
Type "q".
go to select tool, select the q and hit edit -> copy.
Then click the mouse and hit edit -> paste.
A new "q" appears but is bitmapped, low-resolution. I was expecting a nice vectorized font.
