Bug Description

one reason I really like Inkscape is because you rarely need to mess with layers. You just have various objects over leaping each other and some in groups. but when you want to take what you have done in inkscape and now move it over to GIMP/Mypaint/Krita you get one flat image. and when you want to take what you have done in GIMP/Mypaint/Krita and move over to Inkscape you can't because Inkscape does not understand xcf or ora.

Sorry is this has already been reported or discussed. I think that when exporting in Inkscape to .xcf, .ora, .tiff, and any other image format with layers and layer groups, it should convert its objects to layers and its layers to layer groups. Objects in inkscape are really like layers in other image manipulation programs, and Layers in inkscape are kinda like layer groups in other programs.

So why not make Inkscapes understanding of layers and layer groups be objects and layers? This way nomatter what Inkscape is given It will know what to do with it, and if users want to export what they have done to raster without loosing the structure of their objects and layers they can do that.

attracted is an image of what the same file would look like in both inkscapes and GIMPs layer dialogs.

Indeeed. I strongly believe that having .ORA interoperability ( being able to Import graphics files in this format) would be amazing!

It would help Inkscape spread the word even more and strengthen the FLOSS ecosystem (GIMP/Mypaint/Krita and others).

Thanks for the super amazing and uttermost cool vector app! Simply love it. :-)

Having the option to export layers individually would be super nice! +1 for this new feature :-)

Note that you can already export to Gimp XCF format (if Gimp is installed and in your path) with File>Save as>GIMP XCF maintaining layers (*.xcf).

@jazzynico Yes, that option is available but the OP appears to be asking for an option to automatically export objects to layers. Currently, to accomplish what the OP wanted (each object to a gimp layer) each object would have to be placed on its own layer in Inkscape.

Let me see if I can clear things up. I don't know if I described it clearly before. The way I see it.

GIMP Layers = Inkscape objects
GIMP Folder layers = Inkscape layers

In GIMP and other image manipulation programs layers are stacked on top of one another like Inkscape objects are stacked with in each layer. In GIMP Layer Folders are groups of layers that are mainly for organization like Inkscape layers are a group of objects used for oganization.

As far as I can tell Inkscape currently can not open GIMP's .xcf or .ora. I don't know how Inkscape works but I imagine that it does not know what to do with roster formats layers and layer groups. And in the future it will need to know things like Filter/Adjustment layers, layer masks, Layer effects. I don't know how Inkscape would handle these things without being destructive of these layers but that's for you all to figure out. maybe it would just be known that if you open an .xcf or .ora that some layer affects and things might not transfer.
