Bug Description
$ inkscape --version
Inkscape 0.92pre1 unknown (Jul 13 2016)
Aside, that shouldn't happen. Trunk should show the installation version with the --version command. On my machine, it should show: 1:0.91.
$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS \n \l
$ uname -a
Linux panther 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ xdpyinfo | grep 'dimensions:'
dimensions: 2560x1600 pixels (677x423 millimeters)
Replicate
1. Install Inkscape Trunk from PPA
2. Start Inkscape
Expected Results
Regular Inkscape window.
Actual Results

Work Around
Switch to another desktop (e.g., Ctrl+F1) then switch back (e.g., Ctrl+F2). The wonky business is cleared up.
