Bug Description
When dragging and dropping a symbol from the Symbols menu (or copying and pasting) the object appears to be created (you can select it) but it is not visible (you cannot fill, or alter the stroke colour, or do anything I can see to make it visible).

and adjust the the Pasteboard settings of X11/XQuartz as recommended.
Linking as duplicate to bug #307005 - the underlying issue is the long-standing known compatibility issue with X11/XQuartz' default sync settings for the Pasteboard.
