Bug Description
you have an amount of compound paths grouped together and you dive into this group by double-clicking.
Then you switch to the NODE tool and select two nodes of the same object, the align&distribute dialog does not switch to NODE ALIGN mode, but stills in the OBJECT ALIGN mode...this is caused by the fact that you re trying to align nodes within group, if you ungroup those, all works fine.

not confirmed that it is caused by working inside a group (tested with 0.46, 0.47 and 0.47+devel r9456): following the steps detailed in bug #402613 “Align and distribute dialog is broken for nodes” the 'Align and Distribute' dialog correctly switches to the 'Node Align' mode even when editing paths inside a group.
Linking as duplicate to the more recent bug #402613 - please add a comment and revert the duplicate status if you don't agree and think this was done in error.
