Bug Description

It would be nice to have a check box to indicate weather we want raster preview image embedded in EPS (encapsulated post script).

Currently, every EPS image generated by Inkscape looks like an empty box. Attached file is how it looks in OpenOffice.org 2.4.

Hm, I have just realized that OpenOffice.org does not display preview even when it is included in file (at least one generated by Adobe Illustrator).

One thing that should be easy to do is change "Creator" eps comment from version number to "Inkscape "+version number.

Current: "%%Creator: 0.46"

Recommended: "%%Creator: Inkscape 0.46"

Further testing revealed that OpenOffice.org 2.4 displays preview created with GSview on EPS exported from Inkscape. See attached file.

Being able to save .eps files with a preview will sincerely boost up the use of open source apps in full production environments.

I create manuals with lots of drawings made in inkscape... I'd love to use OpenOffice.org to be my main textprocessor as it has lots of features making life easy creating large manuals... things MS Office does not have :)

But as OpenOffice does not allow direct import of SVG drawings but allows .EPS drawings... this preview will really open up things.

Adobes Illustrator does save previews with it's .eps files but I would really like to have an argument to tell others to leave Illustrator as the money consuming thing and switch to Inkscape like I did..

Same "problem" here, with the 0.47 version of Inkscape.
I moved to it after the repeated crashs of 0.46 when trying to create an EPSI file.

Concerning metadata, Inkscape asks for a "Title" when saving the file, but when displaying in Word (Not my choice, work tool), the title doesn't appear in the information panel. The "Creator" has changed from 0.46 (in 0.46) to cairo 1.8.6 (in 0.47).

So, I back up Pieter on the fact that this would be very nice to include epstool or anyother tool in Inkscape to be able to have the preview (maybe as an option) included in the EPS file.

By the way, in 0.47, I have no options to make EPSI files...

This really should be worked on, as it impacts the workflow massively.

I use EPS images in Quark XPress, and the lack of embedded is the only reason I use Adobe Illustrator to edit those EPS'.

So it important for the development of free software :)

Thanks for reporting this, Dženan!

Related information:

Editing an saving an eps image with inkscape 0.48.1 and inserting into LibreOffice 3.3.3 will display a very hires "preview" image in LO. This slows LO down considerably.
Does Inkscape generate this preview image? I found that simply scaling down and then re-saving will solve the problem, with no (visible) consequences for the printed eps.

The software I usually use to generate eps images (tecplot) offers a dialogue to specify resolution and bit-depth of the preview image, I always use very low resolution and 4-bit grayscale, and those are handled in LO with no visible slow-down, even in large quantities.

I'd suggest to have a choice at least of resolution, as very highly resolved preview images not only slow other software down and increase file size, they are also hard to tell apart from actual vector graphics on screen, and that can lead to bad surprises in print. Although of course some may want to use this effect -- hence the need to specify a resolution.

Alright, so it took me 5 months to discover that in the eps saving dialogue the field labeled "Auflösung des Rasters (dpi)" ("resolution for rasterization (dpi)" in English) actually refers to the preview image, not the eps being exported...

This of course invalidates my comment above, as the desired option is already present. I've opened a new bug report (#887427), asking that the option be renamed to something less ambiguous.

@Zak - as commented in bug #887427, the option does _not_ refer to an EPS preview image (Inkscape's EPS export doesn't create one).
