Bug Description

I'm noticing that when I attempt to use the sculpting tool on a fairly complex object Inkscape slows down in a big way, the computer locks up for anywhere from 30 seconds - 2 minutes

a good method of reproduction can be found when attempting to apply the tool to the text generated by the Lorem Ipsum filter.

I’m using Inkscape 0.46 on Windows Vista SP1
so far I have also managed to reproduce it on Windows XP(SP3) and MacOSX

Tested on Ubuntu 9.04, Inkscape 0.46 (Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.53GHz, 2Gio RAM).
The "Lorem Ipsum" test, on a full A4 page (bitstream vera sans, 12), shows a minor slowdown, but no real freeze (2 to 3 seconds, not more).
But it depends on how powerful your computer is...

node-sculpting itself is acceptable, but it takes a really long time in the node tool until all nodes are selected (e.g. with Ctrl+A if you want to sculpt all parts of the path).
