Bug Description

In the previous releases of Inkscape, the "Paste in Place" function seemed to always work as follows:

1) select an object (either a drawing object or a group), or a set of objects
2) CTRL-X to cut
3) CTRL-ALT-V to paste in place
---> the previous selected object(s) appear in the EXACT same position that they were cut from

NOW, the objects are pasted wherever the cursor is located; the same as regular PASTE.

I am using 0.47-pre2-1 on OSX

This is most likely an issue with your X11 configuration, not within Inkscape: can you e.g. 'Alt+click' to click-through-and-select an object that's hidden behind another (as described in the basic tutorial)?

Solution: remap the 'Alt' key from 'mode_switch' to 'Alt_L' as described in "How to make Alt+click and Alt+drag work?":

@ ~suv this has nothing to do with keys, it does not work for me with Xara keys (no Alt there), but it also does not work correctly using the menu (Edit > Paste In Place).

This is really affecting me badly, pasting in place is a very important tool when drawing, especially when working with many layers (my current project has about 60 layers - duplicating and moving up/down layers is just not an option there anymore).

Are the objects pasted as vectors or bitmaps?
Does 'Paste style' or 'Paste size' work for you?

ok, i just realized that the pasted object is a bitmap copy, this is odd..
paste style and paste size does not work either..

so maybe the Copy-function does something wrong? anyway, with Cut the same thing happens..

Can you compare your X11/XQuartz preferences for the syncing of the X11 clipboard with the OS X pasteboard to the settings described the FAQ <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects> or to this X11 Preferences dialog screenshot: <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3627#p17000> and test if it works for you with those settings?

Could be a duplicate of bug #307005.

thank you, this fixed my problem:

# go to X11 > Preferences > Pasteboard
# disable "Update Pasteboard when CLIPBOARD changes

does this mean i can no longer copy stuff from Inkscape into OSX or will this be fixed in Inkscape?

You still can, but from Inkscape to OS X you need to copy twice: first in Inkscape 'Ctrl+C', then use the menubar 'X11 > Edit > Copy' to put it into the OS X pasteboard (works for bitmaps and text AFAIK, haven't tested if it also keeps vector information).

I hope future updates of X11/Xquartz will ease the situation, and maybe Inkscape's clipboard handling needs some fixes too (I don't know for sure - I'm not a developer). The system-wide clipboard <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.47#Desktop_integration_improvements> is new in 0.47 and there are still some parts missing (AFAIU e.g. no copy-paste from memory to memory i.e. the clipboard is saved to a tmp file and imported - or linked in case of the bitmap copies).

This is a major problem for me! I'm using Ubuntu 13.04, Inkscape 0.48, and paste in place consistently places the new object down and to the right of the original object, no matter what I do. The new object is not converted to a bitmap as described in the "duplicate" bug.

Update: this paste in place problem only happens in one of my documents. Using a new document solves it. The document was created in an earlier version of inkscape, so maybe it is some sort of version incompatibilty...
