Looks like a known issue with the X11/Xquartz pasteboard support:
Did you adapt the Xquartz preferences for the syncing of the X11 clipboard with the OS X pasteboard according to the FAQ? wiki.inkscape. org/wiki/ index.php/ FAQ#Copying_ and_pasting_ in_Inkscape_ creates_ pixellated_ images_ instead_ of_copying_ the_vector_ objects> www.inkscapefor um.com/ viewtopic. php?f=22& t=3627# p17000>

Background: The current feature of Xquartz to sync the X11 clipboard with the OS X pasteboard doesn't work well with the new clipboard handling in Inkscape 0.47(pre). Any vector objects copied inside Inkscape are copied as bitmaps - therefor you can't 'paste size' or 'paste style' because the clipboard only contains the bitmap copy without without any specific vector information about size, attributes and gradients.
