can you indicate, which version of Inkscape, which OS, which application are you trying to paste from? Can you copy and paste within the same instance of Inkscape?

Sorry for lack of information!

Inkscape version 0.47

Mac OS X 10.6.1

No, I can't paste anything within Inkscape itself. I even tried a simple square, but it wouldn't work.

The app I tried was Paintbrush 2.0.1

a) change the X11 preferences according to the FAQ:
<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects>
screenshot of changed X11 preferences:

b)This report is most likely a duplicate of bug #307005 “[OS X] copy & paste inserts a bitmap copy instead of the vector object”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/307005>. Please report back whether your issues still occur after changing the X11 preferences - there may well be additional X11 clipboard glitches happening on OS X Snow Leopard which are gathered in bug report #460197 “Can't copy objects in pre4, Snow Leopard”.

@Sandra - since this clipboard issue with X11/Xquartz seems to have worsened on Snow Leopard compared to Leopard, would you mind to answer these questions?

A) Snow Leopard/X11 pasteboard settings:
when you opened the X11 preferences today for the pasteboard settings,
was the top entry
  [x] enable syncing
checked or not?

B) Snow Leopard and X11/Xquartz installation
1) Did you buy your Mac with Snow Leopard pre-installed? if not,
2) did you upgrade directly from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger? if not,
3) did you upgrade from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard? if yes,
4) on Leopard, did you use the default X11 version that came with the OS and that was updated automatically via software update (latest version X11 2.1.6 came with the 10.5.7 OS X update), if not
5) did you install any Xquartz versions from <http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki> (latest version Xquartz 2.4.0)? if yes,
6) do you use a (menu) language other then English? if yes,
7) did you at some time install the localization updates for X11/Xquartz?

Hi,

Firstly, thanks very much as the advice in post no.4 has solved my problem and I can now paste within Inkscape and from the outside app.

Secondly, in answer to post no.5:

A) Yes the 'enable syncing' was checked.

B) 1) No, Snow Leopard was not pre-installed
2) No
3) Yes, I had Leopard 10.5 on machine prior to upgrade.
4) I believe I used the default X11 version (I didn't download in separately at any rate)
5) No
6) No
7) No

Hope this helps and thanks once again.

Regards, Sandra
