Bug Description

Hi there,

I searched the web, some forums, but can't come along with an existing feature request.

It would helpful, if inkscape would offer the recognition of shapes, if you draw them freely ("Draw Freehand lines"). It would be reduce the amount of time to create mockups and some drafts.

Something similar to, but maybe a little more powerful than that recognition found in
- http://svg-edit.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/editor/svg-editor.html

Cheers,

What do you mean? That when you draw a square with the freehand tool a real rectangle (the SVG shape) should appear?

I have used svg-edit but didn't find any "recognition" feature in it.

@Pablo - select the pencil in the fly-out menu of the rectangle or ellipse tool to test this feature.

This feature was first implemented as freehandcircle in v1.0:

In v2.0 the freehand rectangle mode was added:

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

Thanks ~suv. svg-edit creates a circle/rectangle the size of the doodle, so is not exactly a shape recognition.
Real recognition would allow drawing of any shape depending on the shape of the doodle, not just the dimensions. Some "interactive" whiteboards (aren't all whiteboards interactive?) do this with only one tool.

dguennewig, out of curiosity, do you use inkscape with any such thing?

Hi there,

most times I used inkscape to create shapes und simple drawings.

I tried using it to create mockups using a wacom board - the simple ones
http://pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/ScreenShots/ShotDetail.aspx?DocumentPath=screenshots%2fshots%2finter-page-linking
- but failed. There was no good user experience. In such a case it's not
neccessary to create drawings at a high accuracy, but doing it fast.

Sometimes I also using it as a sketchbook to sort some things out
without the need using papers - drafts of diagrams, architectures etc.

I thought using a simple kind of "shape recognition" would reduce the
amount of time to create those kind of drawings while limiting the
effort to implementing such a functionality. In some cases creating
simple lines by hand and optimizing them - a straight line afterwards - would
be helpful and might be easier to implement.

Cheers,
deg
