Make 'Snap from and to text anchors and baselines' active by default

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r10506 and r10516 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i386). On which OS/platform are you testing the devel builds?

Note that there is a new toggle button on the snap controls bar ('Snap from and to text anchors and baselines') which needs to be active to snap text objects to other snap targets like grid or guides. The change was implemented while addressing
- Bug #727281 “Provide button to enable/disable snap-to-text-baseline” and
- Bug #788178 “Not possible: Snap center - not corners bounding box”

Thanks ~suv. I've toggled the button and snapping works fine.

Perhaps the button should be on by default to:
1. match the 0.48 behavior
2. make the "snap to grid" switch turn on/off all snapping to the grid (perhaps minus some rarely used snapping modes).

Not sure I understand - you propose to ignore/override/change the other snap modes/targets (i.e. lose their state each time grid snapping is toggled on/off)? Or to simplify snapping to grid so that everything at all times snaps to grid and can no longer be fine-tuned to match the user's needs or current task?

Changing the report into feature request to activate the text anchor snapping by default (if state is not yet stored in a document).

No, I think "snap to grid" (or other "snap to..." options) should respect the fine tuning options.

However, I think the default set of these fine tuned settings should match "average user expectations" (if such thing exists). In this particular case, a user turning on "snap to grid" option would probably assume that text object will be snapped to grid, unless he/she has explicitly turned this capability off.

Also, note that Bug #727281 was a request for an _ability_ of switching the snapping to the text baseline off, not for switching it off by default.
