Bug Description

Feature request.

Add a new unit of length equal to 1 grid spacing. This would be useful for inputing and measuring object sizes in relation to the current grid spacing value.

The actual length value should not scale with grid spacing settings. That is, once entered, it should be bound to some concrete value and when the grid spacing is changed the length value (expressed in grid units) should change as well.

There should be an exception added to prevent expressing grid spacing in grid units.

How should this be handled if the user is using multiple rectangular grids? And how should this be interpreted for axonometric grids? Are all dimension fields in Inkscape either related to purely horizontal or vertical dimensions? If not, e.g. if we can enter the length of a line having an angle somewhere, then how should this be translated to a multiple of the grid spaing. Should we in this case use the horizontal or vertical spacing?

Diederik, all good questions. Frankly speaking I've forgotten that there are so many options available. In my case I almost exclusively work with a simple (single) square grid.

I think the most natural way of dealing with this would be to have as many units as there are (rectangular?) grids enabled. And, in case when x and y spacings are different, to let the user choose the one he/she wants.

So instead of a single "grid" unit, we could have something like "grid1234", "grid2345-x" etc. This seems like a simplest solution for the most common use case and it scales well with more complex work flows.

In the case of an axonometric grid we could simply pick the "y spacing" value, as others are derived from it.
