Bug Description

I'm using version 0.48-2 on windows 7 64 bits. The recent files lists is stuck with two files, and doesn't change if I open any new file.

I even tried to remove the preferences.xml file, but it is regenereated and the same two old files are still stuck in the recent files list.

Recent files are not stored in the Inkscape preferences file - they are managed by the GTK+ toolkit: Search for a file called '.recently-used.xbel' in your user folder. The exact location might depend on your local system configuration.

Related reports:
Bug #210274 “In Windows the ".recently-used.xbel" file is stored in a wrong location.”

This is not a bug in Inkscape itself AFAIU -> proposing to convert the report to a question.

I deleted that file, and the recent files list is empty now, but still don't get new entries.

Sorry, I misread your initial report: this could be the same issue as one of these earlier reports:

a) non-latin letters in filename:
Bug #629608 “Recent files list”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/629608>

b) files opened by double-click in the explorer:
Bug #780508 “"open recent" does not remember files open via operating system”

a) The letters in the names are all 'normal' latin
b) I've opened files via double click and file->open menu and neither of them keep registered in the recent files list...

I'm using version 0.48-2 on OS X Snow Leopard and also have no items in the Open Recent menu list. The only ones that show up are the ones that are open at the time. When I open Inkscape, there is nothing in the list. As soon as I open or create and save a file it will be there until I close Inkscape. Nothing is there the next time I open it.

@Jan - please try this:

1) open a new terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal
2) enter the following command:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share
3) quit the terminal

Recent GTK+ versions do not create the hidden directory which stores the bookmark file for recently used files (shared by all Gtk+ applications), and subsequently fail to remember recently opened files across sessions. [1]

Note: AFAIU Jan's issue on OS X is unlikely related to the reported issue here (bug #848852) with the Windows port of Inkscape (the location of the Gtk+ bookmarks file on Windows is not hidden, nor inside nested folders which don't exist on a new system).
