Bug Description

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Making_Sugar_icons

We've been using Inkscape for years and then manually modifying svg output.
Would'nt it be great if we could do it all from Inkscape?
I'm sure it has other potential uses!

AFAICT Inkscape already has partial support: it does render the fill & stroke colors defined as such XML entities, but it lacks an interface to add / define such entities, and to keep them after loading and resaving the SVG file (without any edits).

Attaching sample SVG file based on the description on the linked wiki page (slightly modified fill color).

Did you consider working with (document-based) custom swatches? You'd only have to replaced the RGB values of the single-stop osb gradient definitions inside the <defs> section, instead of modifying the style attributes of all objects in the SVG file generated by Inkscape:
<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.48#Custom_Swatches>
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html#Attributes-CustomSwatches>

(Note: custom swatches are WIP - there are some known issues e.g. with duplicated swatches when copy&pasting objects - bug #643150 - and performance regressions - bug #734981).
