Blur can be way faster

Bug Description

I'm no graphics expert, but blur on the visual interface (i.e., the GUI, not the output) should be way faster. There are many blur algorithms - I do not always need a perfectly gaussian blur, so I'd really like to be albe to configure Inkscape to give me a stackblur or something like it.

Example StackBlur in Javascript: http://www.quasimondo.com/StackBlurForCanvas/StackBlurDemo.html

Please, blur should be faster, it is really really too slow, even a Javascript demo outperformed it. I use blur a lot!

Which version of Inkscape are you using? On which OS/platform?
Did you test and compare a current version of the development branch?

Besides having a completely rewritten internal renderer based on cairo (available in the next major release 0.49) with much improved performance for rendering (incl. SVG filter effects like Gaussian blur):
<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.49#Rendering_and_performance>
there has been an additional improvement in current trunk to increase the performance of blurs, see
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.devel/36273>

This is very promising, I'm eager to see it stable. Do you know if the implementation of "Lower quality (faster)" and "Lowest quality (fastest)" could use Stackblur? It's not precise, and not exactly like a gaussian blur, but it's so fast in code I saw elsewhere.

Otherwise, what should I do with this bug? I don't understand how/if I should do something with it (I'm new here).

The release date for the next major version is not yet known. If interested, you can test (unstable) development builds for windows:
On Inkscape's download page
 <http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=en>
click the link for the precompiled Windows packages to
 <http://www.oss-marketplace.com/index.php/downloads-mainmenu-63/Inkscape/Entwicklerversionen/>
There follow the link 'aktuellste Version' to the SkyDrive folder with the latest builds (7z archives).

That's very nice, suv - thanks for the link to the precompiled version!

I hope someday to contribute to Inkscape's source code (much to learn before that I think).

Of course it would be great if we could improve filters and blur performances.
