Bug Description

We have created a SVG on inkscape that looks good on inkscape, and also on firefox inspector. The purpose of this SVG is to transform it via Apache Batik SVG to PDF, feeding it with data through the process. We have made this previously with no problems at all.

The problem now is a misterious black rectangle that appears on certain area of the page when viewing the SVG on Nautilus Preview and also on the resulting PDF; On the other side, the black rectangle doesn't appear in Inkscape nor Firefox or Chrome. We have tried to isolate the element with no success: selecting layers at all levels, with inkscape xml editor, firefox inspector, removing all elements around... it looks like the black rectangle doesn't exist; it's driving us crazy.

The SVG was created with v0.48.3.1 r9886 on Windows 7. We are attaching the SVG to this bug report.

We have put online a couple os screen captures from ubuntu nautilus preview and the resulting pdf:

Thanks in advance.

Reproduced with rsvg-view version 2.34.2 and 2.36.1 (nautilus uses librsvg to render SVG files).

Not reproduced: a PDF file saved from within Inkscape (0.48.2, 0.48.3.1) does _not_ render the black square (truncated 'Flowed text' object).

Please test the attached modified version of the file with the "offending" text object removed: the issue is a flowed text object which isn't visible in Inkscape (because the text completely overflows, and the content duplicates an existing text object beneath). [1]

Related bug reports:
- Bug #485269 “Invisible and unselectable flow region in image”

- Bug #167335 (sf1441003) “flowed text has no SVG 1.1-compliant fallback”
  <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/167335>

Proposing to link as duplicate to bug #485269 (which makes it hard to detect the object which is causing the obscure balck rectangle.

[1] Note: Inkscape's 'Flowed text' is not supported by other SVG renderers. Please read the FAQ

Now it works great the modified SVG. I can see the problem. We had indeed a similar issue in another SVG and i've been able to correct it through plain XML editing in Gedit.

The generated PDF through Batik is also ok.

I couldn't really say if the inability to detect these kind of elements in Inkscape is a bug or a feature... you tell me.

Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback - glad you figured out a way how to address such issues with flowed text objects not visibly rendered in inkscape which appear as rectangles with a black (unset) fill in other SVG viewers.

Linking as duplicate to bug #485269 (it is not obvious how to detect and edit such invisible flowed text objects). Please add a comment and revert the duplicate status if you don't agree and think these are different issues.
