Bug Description

At random times - every few minutes, the taskbar disappears and I get a pop up window that has two tabs, a General tab and a Developer information tab. The General tab says:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are sorry, Plasma closed unexpectedly.

Note: It is safe to close this dialog if you do not want to report this bug.

Executable: plasmashell PID: <pid> Signal: Segmentation fault (11) Time: <date and time>

[Report Bug] [Debug] [Restart Application] [Close]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The task bar restarts automatically. The Developer Information tab says:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Application: Plasma (plasmashell), signal: Segmentation fault
Using host libthread_db library "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1".

If I click on Report Bug, it takes me to the Crash Reporting Assistant. I click on No, I do not remember what I was doing. It tries to generate a bug report and then says "This report does not contain enough information for the developers …". I will see whether I can attach the contents of the report generated by the assistant to this report.

In case it helps, I have multiple desktop packages (ubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, etc.) installed on my laptop, but only started up KDE after boot.

I had the same problem at random time. Adding a new widget and scrolling over caused de error every time after few seconds.

Playing around activities, I tried adding a new empty one. No changes. Then I deleted this new one and the "Search & Launch", which was no functional anyway.

The error has disappeared.

Same problem here, specially when I switch the wifi connection.

Same here, but only on a machine with Nvidia graphics using the Nouveau driver. Another machine with Intel graphics is not affected.
One thing I have noticed is that icons set to Shown on the system tray (usually Networks) often vanish shortly before the message and then reappear afterwards.

I spoke too soon - it's happening on the Intel machine too.

I get a Plasma shell crash at varying times - usually once a day or so. Something that seems to trigger it fairly predictably is switching desktops while certain activities are busy doing network stuff.

I'm a web developer and I have Kate sessions with several dozen files open, such as all the PHP from a WordPress site. I have Dolphin on one desktop and Kate on another. If I open a new batch of remote files from Dolphin, the system (Kubuntu 15.10) switches desktops and opens the new files, but if I don't wait for this to finish and go back to Dolphin (or elsewhere) Plasma tends to crash, usually not offering to restart (but perhaps that message window is on a now-inaccessible desktop?).

The window on the current desktop is still active, but with no system tray I can't move from it. Once I close it I get a black screen and the only way the system will then respond is Ctrl-Alt-Del or Alt-F-something to start a new login shell. I'm not sufficiently experienced to know how to restart Plasma, or even if it's possible.

I have no great interest in operating systems; I just use them. I pick the one that lets me do my work cleanly, and until Plasma 5 KDE/Kubuntu was streets ahead of anything else. If there were something on Windows to match Dolphin/Kate for seamless local and remote file management I'd go there. It's a shame that Plasma 5 is a several-steps downgrade in reliability terms.
