A lot of previous gcc translations aren't used in gcc-4.3

If you look at the gcc 4.3 orig.tar.gz https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/gcc-4.3 you'll see that gcc/po/fr.po doesn't contain translation for this message. This is not a Launchpad problem.

I see that exactly that *is* the problem. Many people did hard work to translate gcc. And now in a new version there are the translations not there any more. Of course this is a problem with launchpad if the translation files don't go into the upstream project automatically so that the translation get used also for newer version.

Would be great if a dev could look at this. It is a waste of resources if this isn't done automatically. Thanks.

At the moment, we are trying to make it clear that people should submit their translations upstream manually. That's the only way it can work, because they would have to be reviewed by upstream translation teams. I.e. I can't submit French translation because I don't speak French well enough to be able to review it.

As far as reuse between different Ubuntu series, that's coming soon as part of our message-sharing implementation. However, it won't work in a case like this because gcc-4.2 and gcc-4.3 are not directly "connected" in any way as packages (they are just like evolution-2.25 and gnome-panel-2.25 to software, simply "different").

reopening. this is not an invalid request. there are many packages which introduce a new source with a new version. if you decide not to implement sharing translations between these packages then close it as wontfix. the request is still valid.

Matthias, it's not a problem of new source. It's a problem of whether Ubuntu is going to ship "many packages which introduce a new source" in the same version (distroseries). Message sharing _was_ designed to support sharing between eg. hardy/evolution-2.22 and intrepid/evolution-2.24.

We can consider enabling message sharing for multiple packages in the same distroseries, but other than gcc, what else would use it?

I'll express my feeling as an Ubuntu and Launchpad user. I use gcc and I've remarked that its translation in French isn't completed. So I go to Launchpad to see how I could hep to complete the translation. I go to this page:

and I click on the "How you can help" link. It's written:

Ok. I have a Launchpad account and a Web browser. ;) It’s that easy.

There are 4990 untranslated strings for the template "gcc-4.3", but if we click on this template, we see lots of strings already translated but not used in gcc-4.3. It's very discouraging and demoralizing.

I encounter this problem with many softwares. timer-applet has strings translated in French on Launchpad, but not used. See my bug 296491. gcolor2 was fully translated in French on Ubuntu 8.04, but it is not translated at all on Ubuntu 8.10. See my bug 302630. gutenprint has a lot of strings that are already translated in French on Launchpad but not used. See my bug 303273.

I think that there's a big problem with the translations' management on Launchpad. As a Launchpad user, I would like to feel that my participation is useful. In concrete terms, how can we merge rapidly gcc-4.0, gcc-4.1, gcc-4.2 and gcc-4.3 translations to be able to continue the translation in good conditions?

For me this absolutely a problem, too.
I think there must be a way, that Ubuntu sends translation files automatically upstream to the project. If ubuntu does not do that, all the translations are for nothing.
Hopefully this will happen sometime. And *all* distributions will be happy about this, not only ubuntu.

every software that is packaged this way and which does have translations:
 - GCC
 - python (but doesn"t have translations)
 - KDE3/KD4
 - libraries where we provide different versions (db4.x, ...)

It will take a while for us to allow such message sharing between different packages: basic message sharing support needs to be in first.

Here we can see why it is extremely important to translate with upstream together.
