Bug Description
Hi,
Some of the tests in test_populatear
I have attempted to test specific behaviour with targeted tests, but
there are some tests that test a lot of things based on the sampledata,
and so I am not sure that I have covered all of the things they are testing
with other tests.
It would be nice to have unit tests with clear intent for this code, to aid
with debugging failures and modifying behaviour.
