Bug Description

Please have a look at the "Mozilla New Mail Icon" extension [1]. This extension is no longer maintained (so there's no thunderbird 3 version) but it gets a few things right that libnotify-mozilla gets wrong, in my opinion:

* Notifications are delivered instantly instead of using a timer
* Notifications are only sent for folders that have the "check this folder for new messages" preference set. Folders that don't have the option set must be checked manually anyway, so additional notifications (that are a few seconds late on top of that) only get in the way
* When the user has read all new messages, the status goes back to 'no new mail'
* The extension can hide the thunderbird window

Thanks for your excellent suggestions.
It seems libnotify and libindicate are going to be supported by default in Thunderbird 3. I'll wait for some more tidings before expanding this extension.

Changed in libnotify-mozilla:
status: New → Triaged

Hi!
version 2.1 is really great now. What I still miss at the moment is the last point mentioned in this bug report:
* The extension can hide the thunderbird window

It would be great, if thunderbird behaves like Empathy: When you close it, it is still in the indicator applet.
There should also be added a starter into the applet (create a file named ‘thunderbird’ in the /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/ folder with the following contents: ‘/usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop’).

Thanks, Jango

I have no progress as of yet on hiding the Thunderbird window, but the envelope icon turns instantly green the moment you receive mail, and "When the user has read all new messages, the status goes back to 'no new mail'". Also, notifications are sent only for folders that are automatically checked for new mail. I will keep you up to date on any further progress.

For me only the hide feature is important, do you think you will implement it?

I used the moztraybiff extension before, and did some improvements (The extension is not maintained anymore, as said before)
I'm using firetray now (it also works for thunderbid).

Maybe you should have a look at FireTay, you can find the source here, its better organized than moztraybiff, I think;-)

the close or hide to tray option will be a great improvement.

another improvement would be that clicking on the folder with new mail in the indicator should bring up Thunderbird with the corresponding folder, actually it shows Thunderbird but within the last viewed folder.
