In Ubuntu 12.10, the greeter does not display the correct resolution on a larger external monitor (1680x1050) when connected to the laptop via VGA.

I guess it uses Xorg's default, which is to mirror the two outputs with the same resolution?

This is still the case in 14.04 Trusty (and also in Debian Jessie).

Yes, it mirrors both outputs with the same resolution and there's no way of telling it to do something different.

For the unity-greeter, copying monitors.xml inside /var/lib/lightdm/.config/ makes it use the desired configuration (and also it doesn't mirror by default).

This has been reported in the past, but no action has been taken:
* https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter/+bug/813566 is marked as Fix Released, with no actual fixes for lightdm-gtk-greeter
* https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 is marked as affecting unity-greeter and not lightdm-gtk-greeter, although it does affect it.
