Bug Description

Acer AO722 freezes after auto login.
Workaround: set up Network Boot as first boot device; it times out then normal boot from HDD and works OK.
This workaround is ok in test but unacceptable when 12.04 LTS is released.
This problem was there several months ago when I bought my Acer AO722; despite numerous kernel upgrades, problem is still there.

Do you know if this issue happened in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Re: "Do you know if this issue happened in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?"
I believe it was there in 11.10 which I tested only once. It was definitely there on the first 12.04 alpha I tested.

Re: "Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel?"
Yes, I did test all kinds of combinations... with AC Power and/or battery.

Scenario #1:
a-power on
b-F2 change BIOS Boot Sequence to '1. HDD0 : OCZ-VERTEX2' (120 GB SSD Drive)
c-F10 (save and reboot)
d-boots ok and runs without freezing
uname -a
Linux U12AO722 Kernel 3.4.0-030400rc3-generic #201204152235 SMP Mon Apr 16 02:36:13 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Note: multiple reboots (NO Power off) with 3.4.0-030400rc3-generic always worked (5-10 minutes each time) without system freezing
e-reboot with Kernel 3.2.0-23-generic
f-boots ok and runs without freezing ??? !!!
g-power OFF and let NetBook sit there for some time (charging battery)

Scenario #2: from POWER OFF
a-Power on and let it boot default Kernel (3.4.0-030400rc3-generic)
b-freezes within seconds after auto login
c-Power OFF

Scenario #3: from POWER OFF
a-Power on and select Kernel 3.2.0-23-generic
b-boot
c-freezes within seconds after auto login
d-Power OFF

For some reason, AO722 or Kernel behaves differently after Power on than after changing BIOS Boot Sequence.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

Please help me understand how this bug can be an "upstream bug" since I
tested with 2 different Kernels (12.04 current 3.2.0-23-generic and
upstream 3.4.0-030400rc3-generic) and ended up with identical results:
1-both Kernels freeze within seconds after autologin when booting from
power on (when HDD0 is first boot device);
2-both Kernels do NOT freeze after autologin when rebooting AFTER
changing BIOS Boot Sequence to HDD0 as first device (from Network Boot).

That tells me it is a current unresolved bug in the current Kernel.

Or am I missing something?

The 3.4.0-030400rc3-generic kernel is the current upstream kernel. It appears you have this bug for Scenario #2, mentioned in comment #3:

Scenario #2: from POWER OFF
a-Power on and let it boot default Kernel (3.4.0-030400rc3-generic)
b-freezes within seconds after auto login
c-Power OFF

I also have experienced the same event on Acer AO522 with 11.10 and 12.04 LTS.
The problem finished when I enlarge swap partition from 2GB to 4GB.

Swap partition n my Acer AO722 was always 4GB therefore swap partition size has nothing to do with this problem.

Aurele Theriault, as per http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update is available for your BIOS (1.11). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.
