Bug Description

Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64-bit

I've had this happen three or four times: I open the music applet from the panel and I'm sliding the volume control, and Cinnamon crashes. It seems to happen when I try to slide the volume down from 50% below past say 33% or so. It's gotten so I don't change the volume anymore because I have too much work to do to lose my desktop.

Sometimes Cinnamon will restart with no problems, but on Tuesday when this happened my entire desktop was locked and I had to power-cycle my system (couldn't even switch to a different virtual console).

FWIW, I use either an HDMI output or an internal analog output (headphones). The last time this happened I was using my headphones for output.

I'm having the exact same issue here. Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64-bit also. It's only been an issue since the upgrade from Mint 15. Cinnamon crashes when you adjust the volume level via the applet. Just using the in-build analog audio.

This affects me as well - almost every time I use the volume applet to change system volume. Very annoying.

I have experience the same issue in 4 different laptops, all of them with linux mint 64-bit.

Is there any work-around that i can use while the bug is not fixed?
Thanks

If you use the "Sound" panel from inside the "All Settings" applet (get there through "Preferences" in the Menu) it seems to work.

This crash happens to me too, not all the time but is very annoying and prejudices my work sometimes.

I've removed the volume applet and I'm controlling volume only by terminal with "alsamixer". It's not cool but it's working for now.

Contrary to my comment above, using the "Sound" panel doesn't always work either. It seems to be less flaky than the panel applet but yesterday it crashed my desktop hard.

Based on the severity of this bug and the lack of response, I'm now looking for a new desktop/distribution.

Is there any specific player that may be running when this happens? Does it occur even no program is interfacing with the applet?

Output of .xsession-errors when this happens?

I don't know about the others but I use banshee. If someone is interested in looking at this I'll try to repro it in various ways when I get home; I don't want to spend an evening crashing my desktop unless it will be useful to someone.

I can reproduce this easily with no player running at all.

Does this happen even on one of the system cinnamon themes? (i.e. Cinnamon, or Linux Mint)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "system cinnamon themes". My desktop is Linux Mint 16 and I didn't do anything to change the theme, other than set the desktop background.

I'll say this, which might be interesting: I have two monitors on my system.

James, what is the currently set theme for Cinnamon (in the "Installed" tab on that setting page)

The weird thing is that if I try kill cinnamon using the 'killall cinnamon' command or try to kill it by using the system monter in another x session using startx from a tty terminal, it does nothing. The only way to kill cinnamon is to use the 'kill' command with cinnamon's PID.

I have the same or similar issue when the audio volume is raised and lowered cinnamon crashes but recovers. Seems to happen only once per session from what I see.

I use linuxmint theme and this happens to me more than once per session. But this mostly happens to me when banshee is playing a streaming or when I'm watching a video using flash.
