Yes it seems (who actually knows until it's fixed) it is something to do with the
Intel gm965 integrated graphics chip

May be the driver did not compile correctly in the kernel or something : I was just looking at ...

says a problem was identified with
GM965
Person then installed
xf86-video-intel
and everything else
xorg

when I searched my system for
xf86-video-intel
I only found
xserver-xorg-video-intel
the attached screenshot says this is the driver for the
i965
series chips.

I do not know if this is the correct driver and it does not work properly or it is the wrong driver.

AHHHHH i just noticed

is grayed out as an update available and (not) installed on the problem laptop

I selected the package and chose from the menu
Package --> Force Install

I'll let U know if it makes a difference
