Bug Description

When clicking on a LibreOffice file to open it, I get the splash screen and then nothing else. As it's been happening for a long time and making me mad, I tried to debug this today, and found that the URL pantheon-files passes to the preferred application has an "extra slash".
Here's the debug info:

[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.584092] gof-directory-async.vala:100: Async toggle_ref_notify file:////tmp
[_LOG_LEVEL_INFO 11:47:49.745409] gof_file_set_thumb_state file:////tmp/test.xls 3
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.745496] gof-directory-async.vala:529: found cached dir file:////tmp
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.745545] icon_changed_callback file:////tmp/test.xls 3
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.747612] gof-directory-async.vala:529: found cached dir file:////tmp
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.747664] >>>>reuse file file:////tmp/test.xls
[_LOG_LEVEL_INFO 11:47:49.747696] gof_file_set_thumb_state file:////tmp/test.xls 2
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.747807] gof-directory-async.vala:529: found cached dir file:////tmp
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.747843] icon_changed_callback file:////tmp/test.xls 2
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:49.748549] gof-directory-async.vala:529: found cached dir file:////tmp
[_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG 11:47:51.985371] update_menus

As you can see, the URL has 4 slashes, and that seems to be the cause of libreoffice behavior:

xdg-open file:////tmp/test.xls ==> splash and dies
xdg-open file:///tmp/test.xls ==> file opens OK

This happens most of the times, but sometimes it just works as expected. If there's something else I can provide to fix this, please let me know. I'm running pantheon-files 0.1.6-0~r1425+pkg20~ubuntu12.04.1 on Luna.

It can be reproduced if the pathbar is used.

It happens often with bookmarks. Sometimes going through "File System -> path -> to -> file" works, but using a bookmark the problem arises.

Please could you confirm whether this bug is still occurring? I think it has been fixed but I am not sure when. Thanks

I'ts still happening on Luna. Don't have Freya to test.

All the development effort is going into Files 2.0 for Freya at the moment. This is on rev 1746 compared to rev 1425 for the Luna version and substantial changes to the code have been made.

Freya is on beta2 at the moment so hopefully be released in the not too distant future. If you are comfortable testing beta software you can download it from http://beta.elementary.io/

OK, I tried the beta on a VM and AFAICS the bug is not present there, so I guess it was fixed.

It's kind of sad that bugs like this are not fixed (nor backported) on the current "stable" release, and have to wait a whole (and very long) release cycle to be fixed.

I understand. There is limited developer time available and because of the substantial code changes it would not be straightforward - or even possible - to backport many fixes.

If you think you will continue to use Luna for some time I will try to fix this bug in Luna for you.

OK, I know, you guys do what you can, and I really appreciate your work. I wish I had the skills to help, but I can just help donating.

But I think is important not to forget that current stable releases need to be mantained. Sometimes I'm under the impression that after releasing a new version, all the effort and focus moves to the "wonderful new features" on version+1, forgetting about fixing the bugs on stable.

Talking about this bug, I don't think is worth fixing it *now*, specially if it's not straightforward, as I'm kind of used to it after dealing with it for about a year now, and am anxiously waiting for freya release to upgrade. But thanks for your offering anyway.

Thanks. I joined elementary around the time Freya was started and only recently became the Files maintainer. I intend to keep supporting Freya even after Freya+1 is started.
