Shutter captures junk instead of the screen

The screen looks normal, no flicker or anything else distorting. I ask Shutter to make a selection screenshot, it covers entire screen with something garbled, possibly derived from its icon, and then, captures that junk. The same happens in all modes of capture - junk in the end. For a window or desktop mode, I do not even see the junk on the screen before it is captured.
