If you are using fcitx then can you try these two input methods in slingshot instead of fcitx?
1) nimf
$ sudo apt insatll nimf
$ im-config -n nimf
Logiut & login to use

2) uim-pinyin
$ sudo apt install uim uim-pinyin
$ im-config -n uim
Logout & login to use
