Bug Description

First bug report on M10 so forgive if I am doing anything wrong. I am just having no luck on getting complex text selected - stuff like mathematical expressions or passwords where there is a mix of alphabetical symbols, numerals, and punctuation in plain text with no spaces. Among other reasons this is important to me is that I use massive long passwords and sometimes have to copy them from one place to another, and math/sql/similar expressions are a mess to handle too. What selects is portions of the text, but the selection will not expand to the whole thing.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for such a fast reply. I don't want to sound negative because I'm
thrilled Canonical and BQ are pushing into tablet / touch and convergence
territory!

This issue as I perceive it is that selecting text through portions of a
mess like:
5G2sX.m0&j^g5D3(,M~dGt&^8hbv
can seem impossible. My first experience of it was in trying to select a
password out of a text passage in an email I had open in the GMail app. I
was unable to select and copy that chunk of text out of the body of an
email the other day.

To verify the issue and clarify my perceptions I replicated the test today
in the GMail app. Several issues seem to be at play:
1. The ability to select portions of a long complex string like the one
above is very limited. The selected highlight jumps about - selecting too
little then too much.
2. The "handles" with which to select are too small, making the use of them
difficult.
3. Once I have a passage selected, and the passage may need to be more than
I want because selection is imprecise, the "copy" function is grayed out -
so I cannot use the selection.

Using one of the "Notes" apps, selection is very fiddly and jumpy as above,
but it does work, and the copy functionality is available. I am still
concerned about the size of the handles and the lack of smooth
responsiveness, but I am able to get it to work, but the experience is less
than pleasant. So, I guess my most serious issues are in using the GMail
app. A grayed out option is no option at all. And moody selection becomes
a real user frustration.

I apologize that I have no idea how to create a movie of the issues.

I really want to see Ubuntu Touch and Linux in general gain ground and so
am happy to answer any questions I have not communicated well on. I
suspect much of what I speak of lies somewhere in a muddy area between bug
fixes and design, especially the size of the selection handles.

Size of controls is a UI problem. Does Canonical have a place to send UI
thoughts about Ubuntu Touch? I suspect design issues are something of a
distraction for you in working through real bugs. And yet I would like to
be able to send any relevant thoughts where they could be helpful.

Thanks again,

Charlie Goodwin

I've been testing this and it looks like the issue is about responsiveness for the M10 hardware and the handles are not responding to the larger display. This is not an intended feature and will be addressed.
