Bug Description
Description: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS
Release: 20.04
When inserted in the 3.5mm phone jack, the external microphone is not detected, and thus the audio input doesn't auto-switch from the internal microphone to the external microphone.
The problem probably is related to the kernel version, as kernels 5.11.0-34, 5.11.0-36,5.11.0-37 and 5.11.0-38 works as expected, but kernels 5.4.0-104, 5.11.0-40, 5.11.0-41, 5.11.0-43, 5.11.0-44, 5.11.0-46, 5.13.0-30 and 5.13.0-35 don't. A similar problem happens for Debian 11.

Same here on a HP 14 Stream laptop with this Realtek ALC236 sound card running Xubuntu 20.04. Also pluging in an external headset and microphone the laptop speakers do not mute and the headphones do not go live, they remain muted.
Maybe worth noting that; Using pavucontrol having plugged in headset i can switch to headphones which then transmit sound and the external microphone opperates ok but even then pavucontrol states headset as un-plugged same as before plugging in. Laptop speakers mute once switched to headset and i presume the internal microphone is blanked.
With regret i have deinstalled Xubuntu and reinstalled Arch Linux and so i cannot test further. It is obvious to me that this bug? is not distribution specific and is generic becouse exactly the same problem in Arch. I could test or check and report here from this Arch install if such information is useful to you.
Best wishes to you, Chris
