Bug Description

EDIT: somehow the sound works now for videos and applications, but the "test speakers" function in sound preferences does not.

i did this to get fnv working in wine (it worked haha):
http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=1457

but then after a restart, there was no sound in ubuntu at all.
went through these, no effect:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

at first sound properties didn't load at all, i got this: "ubuntu waiting for sound system to resond"
so i did this:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-10-04-tip-how-to-fix-waiting-for-sound-system-to-respond-problem.html

so i can access the sound properties but still no sound.
