Another example of why you might want 32-bit libraries is that I want to build wine with GL support, but when I try to install the libglu1-mesa-dev:i386 library (from xorg-edgers), apt-get wants to remove over 20 amd64 packages, and I'm not sure how badly it might break my system to go ahead.
