Bug Description

All menu items are greyed out and insensitive on my machine after an upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04. The only menu items that show as sensitive are sub-menus, all of whose menu items are greyed out.

I am still able to save my current project with the Ctrl-S shortcut, and I can open files from nautilus. The normal pause, play, stop, etc buttons work as expected as part of the main user interface. It appears only to be the main drop-down menus that are affected. I am running unity, and the drop-down menus are in the 13.10 style - ie are at the top of the screen rather than being part of the audacity window.

I am running unity + gnome shell, currently in gnome. I am experiencing the same problem. Even after selecting a certain portion of the sound file by highlighting it, basic functions like copy, remain greyed out. Of course, all the effects are also greyed out.

Same problem after a fresh install of 14.04 (no upgrade).

Workaround: Delete the .audacity-data folder in your home directory. The next time you launch Audacity, menu items should be re-enabled.

I have no idea why audacity seems to be corrupting its own data and tripping on itself...

Update: While the workaround of deleting ~/.audacity-data works initially, the menu items soon become greyed out again when you begin to interact with Audacity :(

I may have figured it out... if you have started to play the music, then most items will become disabled. Pausing does not re-enable the menu items... you must stop playback, and then the items will become re-enabled. I figured this out once I noticed that this occurs even on Windows 7 with Audacity.

Wish I had subscribed to this bug-- your workaround works!

I'll start editing in Audacity now and see how it works over time i.e. whether stopping playback consistently re-enables the menu items.

To the maintainers of Audacity: It would be nice to get a permanent solution so we don't have to keep deleting the ~/.audacity-data prior to opening up Audacity in order to enable the menu items.
