Wish: modularized /etc/bash/* sourced from /etc/skel/.bashrc

Bug #194108 reported by era
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
bash (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: bash

Bugs such as f'rinstance bug 103929 and (to a lesser extent) bug 144632 call for increasingly complex code in users' .bashrc. Complex means error-prone, means likely to contain bugs, means likely to change from one version to another. Perhaps now would be a good time to modularize this so that (1) users don't easily end up with .bashrc files with a mix of code from different Ubuntu releases and (2) e.g. color support can be easily suppressed by users who prefer not to have it.

In .bashrc, simply have something like

# Comment out this to disable color support in color-capable terminals
. /etc/bash/colorization

# Uncomment this to have convenient aliases for some commands
# . /etc/bash/aliases

Modularization I hope would also improve documentation, since it's a lot less intrusive to have extensive comments in a once-only file somewhere in /etc than to put extensive comments in /etc/skel/.bashrc

There hasn't been any activity in this ticket for a while. Is this still a problem in Jaunty or Karmic?

This is an enhancement request. Unless you believe the enhancement has somehow evolved by itself (or there is Intelligent Design at play ... sorry, could not resist) there isn't much reason to believe that the "bug" stops.

r0lf: I don't have the permissions to set the status back to Triaged. Could you take care of that, please?

Era, thank you for your quick response.

I'm not an expert on what gets sourced and what doesn't. It's not at all unheard of that old tickets, RFE or not, are not closed even when a fix for the underlying issue is released. After more than a year with no activity, I felt a short ping to verify there is still work to be done for this ticket was appropriate.

Would you please be so kind to let us know what release of Ubuntu you are currently using?

I use Intrepid and Jaunty. I downloaded Karmic alpha 3 for other reasons and confirm that this was not fixed there either.

Thanks for the quick turnaround.
