How are you trying to install? Did you download the bcmwl-kernel-source from a website? That version for bcmwl seems to be from 9 years ago

Yes sir I am trying to install and yes it is old. I should have known it
wouldn't work. But what I'm trying to do is get a WiFi dongle working on
Focal Fossa I've tried two dongles and both supposedly they are
compatible with Window$, Mac and Linux. But 20.04 doesn't see them no
matter how many times I reboot.

You should be able to install the driver from the driver manager or by using this command in terminal with an ethernet connection

sudo apt update && sudo apt install bcmwl-kernel-source

I did try that and rebooted still 'no WiFi adapters found'. And when I
go into additional drivers 'no drivers available'. I am running a Dell
Optiplex 9020 using a WiFi dongle that reportedly works with Window$,
Mac and Linux.

Thank you Jeremy.

I was skeptical at first but then ran the steps listed and lo and behold
I've got WiFi.
