Good on you for taking the first step. I've been swimming since kindergarten so I can't relate to you on the embarrassment part, but I did start self-defense classes a year ago and I was embarrassed that someone would laugh at how I might throw a punch or if I didn't hit the bag hard enough. I guess that's similar? Anywho, fuck 'em. You're improving yourself, why would you let anyone stop you even on a subconscious level?

You know, if you're not sure, you could try talking to your doctor. You could benefit from therapy or medication.

But if you do want to try stuff on your own, one of the most effective things you can do on your own is excercising regularly.

As for TV/anime, I don't know what you've watched, but Baccano! Is solid, especially if you like 1930s American gangsters and stories set on trains.

When folks come here with moderation as a goal, we often suggest that they pick a period of time- 30 days is pretty standard, but some folks choose 60 or 90- do do an absolutely zero excuses stint of sobriety. It is so educational to observe when and why you drink, and how many of those drinks are "useless" or habitual. As a statistics guy, you'd probably love this-- not only does it get you off to a great numeric start, you can chart that period of time of "were I not doing this sobriety stint, I would have had a beer here out of habit, and, on reflection, I really didn't need to to have it."

I'm celebrating one year of NO drinks today, and there's not a day in the past year that I look back on and say, "I really wish I'd have had a glass of that Whatever the Hell Chandon 1973" (honestly, all the drinks I was offered in 2014 were "useless"/habitual kind of drinks. I can honestly say I didn't miss out on a thing.

Brooks was dead for along time, and by "dead" I mean his soul left his body and couldn't find it for many years, he was stuck on the ship for a while but it was probably a time span a ordinary human could survive. The ship was stocked for a crew and it was just him, he had some nice tea when he met the Straw hats
