Sorry, I cannot help, but I must tell:

comparing to Windows, printing under linux (here: Xubuntu, Samsung CLP-550) is so terrible slowly (and printer-memory consuming) - it would be really a big advantage to tune and speed this up.

I know, it is a general Linux-theme. But hey, it is really, really annoying. (How shall I explain this to my children? Tux is cute, but be *very* patient while printing?)

maybe it is helpful to write some details:
-especially- time is required, when printing double-sided pages for example, which sometimes take 2-4 minutes. For PDF-textpages.

Which drivers do you use? If I remember right, color printing is slow by Samsung CLP-315W, if you use Samsung's proprietary SPL-C driver, which may give you better colors than other drivers.
Recommended open source driver for CLP-550 is different from the one recommended for CLP-315, though:

Allright, I will try http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Samsung/Samsung-CLP-550.
Currently I am using the CLP-550(N)-driver from http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/

http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/ provides much more detailed (and better fitting) options than the common (X)Ubuntu printer driver.
http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/ is based on the original Samsung driver (as far as I know).

I cannot remember the detailed results between using the Ubuntu-/bchemnet-driver, it is too long ago. I will re-check this.
