Bug Description

Installation of Kubuntu 11.10 beta2 from alternate CD fails during kernel install step when root partition has btrfs.
First I found it on my Eee PC 901 laptop, then reproduced this error on VMWare virtual machine.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start installer from Kubuntu alternative CD (kubuntu-11.10-beta2-alternate-i386.iso).
2. Select language and keyboard layout.
3. Do not configure network
4. Select TZ.
5. Create new partition or select existing, set type to btrfs, mount point to /.
6. Continue installation.
7. Error: Unable to locate package linux-headers-generic.

If root partition is ext4, installation works. I haven't tried using btrfs for other partitions. Having network configured doesn't seem to help, but I somehow managed to install system once on btrfs, so I'm not sure.

This is basically an unfortunately poor response to:

  Oct 2 15:19:45 in-target: dpkg: error processing /media/cdrom//pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-3.0.0-11-generic_3.0.0-11.18_i386.deb (--unpack):
Oct 2 15:19:45 in-target: unable to install new version of `/lib/modules/3.0.0-11-generic/kernel/sound/pci/trident/snd-trident.ko': No space left on device

btrfs isn't always a particularly efficient user of disk space. Try giving it more space?

Well, the partition size was 20Gb (19Gb on laptop), so there is plenty of space. I tried installing the package linux-image-generic manually while monitoring free space with 'df -h', and it always had 18-19+ Gb of free space. Funny that once in a while package just installs normally.
So this is probably a kernel bug.
Tried with a 40Gb disk, and it worked, but it is not an option for my netbook, since it only has 20Gb of space on it's two HDs.

Having the same problem at this very moment with an 11.10 netinstall. So . . . I just can't use btrfs? That's kindof silly.

I can confirm the bug, having the same problem under 11.10 final. I tried both i386 and amd64 using the text-installer and installing on a btrfs partition, but it fails.

I am opting to raise the importance of this bug, a non-installable system is a no-go!
