Bug Description

Binary package hint: dkms

Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04

Shortly after bootup I was browsing in swiftfox and this crash notification message popped up saying this package had failed to install. I don't remember requesting this package. I have my upgrade manager set on manual only and I don't think I did anything to start one, and I don't think I had Synaptic running so I don't know what prompted this installation attempt or the subsequent crash.

To try to learn more about the bug I ran these follow up tests. It demonstrated that that package came from the installation disk. i had previously checked the repository option that includes the install CDROM. However I was unable to repeat a crash or same error.

1) I ran Synaptic and saw that it said dkms _IS_ installed after all, but I went ahead and did a reinstall with the CDROM in the drive and it succeeded.

2) continuting in Synaptic without restarting I did a reinstall of dkms without the CDROM in the drive (but connected to the internet). After a minute or so it asked
Please insert the disk labeled:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100429)
in drive /cdrom/
I inserted it and closed the disk drive and then hit the okay button. It succeeded.

3) I did the same as #3 except this time I did not close the drive until after i hit the okay button.
This time it reported:
{first line is aproximation, the rest is a quote} Could not mount Lucid Lynx 10.04
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/sr0 already mounted or /media/cdrom0 busy
I clicked okay, then it immediately downloaded the file succeeded in reinstalling the dkms package.

It looks like your installation media no longer contained DKMS on it.

dpkg: error processing /media/apt//pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb (--unpack):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory

I'm not sure of your installation media source, but this is certainly not a bug in DKMS.

affects: dkms (Ubuntu) → dpkg (Ubuntu)

hmmm.... my installation media was a 10.04 CD, which I'm not sure if it was in the drive then or not (if I knew how to read them maybe my apport data would answer that. Apport just popped up with this and I sent it in.

Are you using some local apt cache, or did you copy the archive from another machine ?

I believe my archive was the original Lucid Lynx installer disk.

When I look at the /.disk/info info it says:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429)

Please tell me if there is any other info you need to ID the disk.
