Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Update notifier told new updates were available, including some for Firefox.

I was already surfing with Firefox, and let the update notifier download (and then automatically install) those updates. After it had installed those updates, it said restart of Firefox was necessary. I had some stuff to do, so I checked and wrote some emails etc. After a while I then thought now I could restart Firefox.

I closed Firefox, and let it wrote open tabs to hard disk, and then opened it. As usual after update, extensions were checked, but it said nothing. Then only "Welcome to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS user" page was shown, and none of my open tabs, they were lost.

Also there are some other repeatable situations when Firefox loses open tabs, like if I have "Downloads" window open, and close the main browser window, then it's too easy to unintentionally lose all tabs. Firefox should always take care that user does not lose his/her stuff.

and has been confirmed in previous versions in the duplicate bug. I'm currently searching the mozilla bugzilla to see if this is an ubuntu-specific issue.

As I already wrote in the duplicate, I've proved that is
ubuntu-specific (or maybe debian-specific too?). In fact:

a) the upate process for the original firefox is different

b) installing (in ubuntu) the original firefox, then updating with
open tabs, and then closing and finally reopening it does work as
expected (see the duplicate bug for further details)

I think the "losing tabs when download window is open" is a different
bug, might be present on the original firefox, and should require a
different bug.

sorry, davide. I only marked the bug you reported as the duplicate because it was filed after this one.

I haven't been able to find this bug on the debian bug tracker, but I don't know anything about the differences between the update process for firefox in debian and ubuntu. if manually downloading firefox and updating through firefox doesn't yield the same behavior, then it seems to be an issue with the way ubuntu updates firefox.

I hit the same bug. Usually if there is a problem I can simply take the sessionstore.bak file and overwrite sessionstore.js to recover but that is not working.

I really need to get this all back because I have two Firefox windows, each with about 10-15 open tabs related to my work that is pending or current.

I notice that every time ff closes it blows away the sessionstore.js file rather than writing writing out to it, or at least that was the action without adding any new tabs to the default window. Every time I start it I get

-rw------- 1 amon amon 167995 2010-02-18 13:37 sessionstore.bak2
-rw------- 1 amon amon 486 2010-02-18 14:00 sessionstore.js

even when I have recreated sessionstore.bak and sessionstore.js from the 'real' backup, bak2.
