gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

Thank you for your bug report, the daily iso doesn't have the issue there. Do you get the problem in a guest session as well? Could you take a screenshot showing the bug?

Can confirm I'm not seeing the problem in today's ISO or in a guest session.

gedit just updated to version 3.21.90 - problem persists.

Might be a Xubuntu issue; i am not getting this problem on Ubuntu with a gnome-shell session on 64 bits yakkety install

Just to clarify I am *not* running Xubuntu.

This install may well have started out as Xubuntu but it was successfully converted to Ubuntu during the Xenial cycle. gedit worked perfectly both before and after upgrading to *Ubuntu* Yakkety.

I noticed this problem yesterday so possibly caused by a conflict with a recently upgraded package?

Maybe then related to the theme(s) used: try switching them from the tweak tool

I always use the default (Ambiance) theme. Changing to Radiance makes no difference. But changing to Adwaita restores the white background of gedit's edit window. Changing back to Ambiance or Radiance gives me the transparent window.

Is this a bug in light-themes or a rogue user setting as logging in as another user and the Guest session both show gedit to be working properly.

Recent naming is 'ubuntu-themes' which provide 'light-themes' and others

New install, same PC, similarly updated as before but bug no longer seen. Will therefore mark this as being "Incomplete" and come back to it if the problem is seen again.

I see this bug after upgrading 16.04 to 16.10 just now.

Me too after upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10.

I see this immediately after upgrading from 16.04 to 16.10. It's also the case with the result area in gnome-calculator. A screenshot is attached.

Raising importance cuz isn't only aesthetic issue but it affect usability

Confirmed Gedit and Calc display this problem after upgrading 16.04 to 16.10. I am using 367.57 from nvidia-367 as my display driver if that is useful information?

I can confirm this bug on the calculator with the transparent box, this is making the gnome calculator useless. I upgraded from Ununtu 16.04 to 16.10. I have been upgrading this laptop from 14.04 and also run the standard themes, might played with themes in the past though. My laptop has a amd radeon card. But what I noticed was that if I go to Additional Drivers tab on Software and Updates my card is not showing anymore, it used to show and was on the generic driver.

I confirm this bug with gedit, the calculator and text boxes in gtk3-widget-factory. Changing the colour scheme in Gedit is a workaround. I have this problem with my user, on Ubuntu 16.10 upgraded from 16.04, but not logging in the guest session. So I guess the reason is some hidden setting left by 16.04

I had the same problem after the 16.04 -> 16.10 upgrade
I noticed that newly created users did NOT have the problem.
So its was probably a config issue
I resolved it by removing the "~/.xinputrc" file in my home directory. which is not present in a new users home directory.
This has worked on all system I have upgraded to date

Just a quick update..
The content of the .xinputrc file was a single line

   run_im xim

I think that this may have something to do with the problem.

.xinputrc is generated by language settings when you change the input type.
in 16.10 when I set the input type to none the new .xinputrc file contains

   run_im none

And the background is still OK in gedit & calc etc

So the problem is the content of the .xinputrc file and not the presence of the file.

I followed Chris Martin's suggestion in #22 and it worked for me.

Setting to 'incomplete' as its a borked private settings, not a bug per se.

#22 worked for me, after logout/login.

Not worked for me. System was upgraded from Xenial to Bionic. Previously was unity desktop, now is gnome3.
Text editor never clears background.
I try to remove ~/.xinputrc and relogin, but nothing changed.
