Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

When moving a text selection with the mouse, gedit autoscrolls so that the currently highlighted line is centered to the screen/client area. This tends to be confusing (i.e., the user needs to locate the target line again). Usually happens when the highlighted line is near the top/bottom of the screen. Also, there is no indication of the exact insertion point ---and the mouse icon is not useful at all.

This happened in Gutsy, and still happens in Hardy-beta.

Well, I don't know whether this qualifies as bug or wishlist.

It has to do with the way gedit behaves when you select some text and then try to move such selection with the mouse. If the text you select is at the top or at the bottom of the client area*, then gedit autoscrolls the area so that the selected text is at the center of the client area, and it tends to be confusing since the target point to the which the selected text is going to be moved, needs to be found again by the user.

Steps to reproduce:
- Open a text file large enough to be scrollable (e.g., 100 lines or so)
- Scroll down so that the line 41 is located at the top of the of the client area.
- With the mouse, select some text from line 41 and, while holding the mouse button, start moving it slowly to the bottom (at this point, gedit will autoscroll up so that the line 41 is located at the center of the client area; by default, it shouldn't autoscroll at all, since it tends to be confusing).

Also, when you move some selected text with the mouse, there is no indication (i.e., insertion point) of where exactly the text is going to be once you release the mouse button; the mouse arrow is changed by a little hand during this process, but it is pretty much useless.

Steps to reproduce:
- Open a text file and paste the following two lines:
There'se's buying a st a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
  And shairway to heaven
-Select "e's buying a st" from the first line and, using the mouse, move it to the second line so that it is located exactly after "And sh" (notice that there is no way to know exactly where the text will be put, since there is no insertion mark).

And I don't whether this is the usual way or not, but when selecting text by using the keyboard (i.e., Ctrl+Shift+Arrows), selections are done on an alphabetic, numeric or underscore basis, instead of being done on a word basis (i.e., selecting the text "Fahrenheit_451" could be done in one step, instead of two)... And the same applies when moving through the text on a word by word basis (i.e., Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right).

I can confirm this in 2.23.1-0ubuntu1 (8.10) as well.
