I am running dapper. From a terminal, just type (i.e.)

gksudo gedit

and I am getting this (in the terminal):

(gedit:10047): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.
