Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-codec-install

No codec pack is suggested in Lucid Alpha when trying to view a video, without the proper codec installed. The specific video is a MP4/AVC contained in a MOV file. I cannot troubleshoot any further as gnome-codec-install does not have a man page.

To reproduce:
1) Daily Development LiveCD (20091202) for Lucid Lynx 9.10 Alpha.
2) Open firefox and go to http://people.ubuntu.com/~komputes/ubuntu_codec_bucket-o-fail/MVI_0433.MOV

What happens:
Nothing, just totem plugin in firefox window with solid black as content.

Expected:
gnome-app-install should come up and suggest a codec

Can you please try the following in a terminal and attach the output:

gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=http://people.ubuntu.com/~komputes/ubuntu_codec_bucket-o-fail/MVI_0433.MOV

I'm using Karmic with the following installed:

Totem 2.28.2
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.25-2ubuntu1.1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.9-1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.16-1ubuntu3
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.14-4ubuntu1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.12-1

When I issue the command above I get the following:

Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
ERROR: from element /GstPlayBin2:playbin20/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin0/GstDecodeBin2:decodebin20/GstQTDemux:qtdemux0: GStreamer encountered a general stream error.
Additional debug info:
qtdemux.c(2816): gst_qtdemux_chain (): /GstPlayBin2:playbin20/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin0/GstDecodeBin2:decodebin20/GstQTDemux:qtdemux0:

ERROR: pipeline doesn't want to preroll.
Setting pipeline to NULL ...
Freeing pipeline ...

I may need to file a separate bug for this but will wait to see what result you get.

In Lucid alpha 3 I still get the totem plugin in firefox window with solid black as content. However, issuing gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=http://people.ubuntu.com/~komputes/ubuntu_codec_bucket-o-fail/MVI_0433.MOV now results in the movie being played back.

Package versions:

Totem 2.29.91-0ubuntu2
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.28-1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.10-1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.21-1ubuntu1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.18-1ubuntu1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.14-1
