Thank you for your bug report, the log has those warnings which is weird

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0".

could be somehow due to the nvidia drivers

could you provide some details on the screens configuration you are using?

Would be happy to.
What files would you most like to see?

just verbal description of the numbers of screens, layout, video cards/drivers

two HDMI screens side-by-side
2 old nvidia cards (both GeForce 8400GS)
nvidia driver 340.108 (latest version, required by cards)
Xinerama enabled
software kept fully up-to-date with stable release

Side comment -- gnome seems to crash a lot.
This is first situation where I can use gdb to get stack information.

Unsure if xinerama is creating any issue there, could you add your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to the report?

The Xorg log was sent via email and contains

(WW) NVIDIA: The Composite and Xinerama extensions are both enabled, which
(WW) NVIDIA: is an unsupported configuration. The driver will continue
(WW) NVIDIA: to load, but may behave strangely.
(WW) NVIDIA: Xinerama is enabled, so RandR has likely been disabled by the
(WW) NVIDIA: X server.

gnome-control-center should handle the situation better but that's a bit of a special graphical display configuration, did you try to do without xinerama?

Turned off COMPOSITE, and am getting the same reaction.

Sebastian,

Just turned off Xinerama (for a few minutes).
For some reason, the system is unable to use both screens without Xinerama.
Played with this a lot when I upgraded to 20.04 from 16.04 (worked nicely
before upgrade).
FWIW, cursor is a big X on second screen, but no background and no moving
windows onto it.
